Responding to COVID-19
Update – Friday 20 March
Carpentaria remains committed to the safety and wellbeing of participants and staff as the COVID-19 situation develops in the NT. A Pandemic Response Team has been established and is meeting daily to monitor developments.
Carpentaria has implemented several safety measures and adjustments to minimise risk of infection across programs:
- Supported Independent Living participants continue daily health checks and adjustment of daily community access activities as required. Access to houses is restricted for people returning from domestic travel and those who are unwell
- Activities in the Day Program have been modified to minimise risk, with no group activities offered and a 1:1 ratio to be implemented from Monday 23 March to allow service continuity at this time
- Allied Health Therapy sessions continue as scheduled, with online sessions available when children or parents are unwell or unable to attend Carpentaria therapy rooms. The team is building their capacity to provide more online sessions in the coming months
- Short Term Accommodation services have been paused for remote participants and activities for urban participants have been modified to minimise risk of infection. Access to houses is restricted for people returning from domestic travel and those who are unwell
- Support Coordination services are available via teleconference where required
- A substantial increase in sanitation and cleaning schedules has been implemented across all program locations
- All Carpentaria staff are required to self-isolate for a period of 14 days after returning from interstate travel
- Where possible, all Carpentaria staff are encouraged to practice physical distancing and to minimise face-to-face meetings
We acknowledge that this is a rapidly changing situation which may mean further program adjustments are required. We are working on contingency planning to reduce the impact on participants, their families and Carpentaria staff.

Carpentaria continues to closely monitor the evolving COVID-19 outbreak and remains committed to the safety and wellbeing of all participants and employees.
How is Carpentaria reducing risk to participants and employees?
We are working to reduce the risk of infection across the organisation by:
- Highlighting the importance of high quality hand washing and cough hygiene to all employees and participants, with staff completing an online module provided by Disability Services Consulting ‘Supporting People to Stay Infection Free’
- Installing additional hand sanitation dispensers and hand washing reminders in all work locations
- Increasing cleaning regimes, particularly for high touch surfaces
- Ceasing face-to-face delivery of Allied Health services into remote communities (with appointments to be held via teleconference where possible)
- Urging staff to reconsider travel to high risk destinations and assessing the need for domestic travel
What about vulnerable participants?
Carpentaria has completed an assessment of all current participants and identified those who have additional health requirements and are more vulnerable to risk of infection. Additional support around hygiene, group-based activities and general well-being has been provided. Daily schedules are being reviewed and adjusted where necessary, to minimise exposure to large groups and high traffic locations.
In addition, daily health checks have been implemented for all Supported Independent Living participants, and Day Program participants have been reminded that anyone who is unwell should not attend the program.
How will Carpentaria ensure continuity of services?
Carpentaria is committed to providing ongoing services across programs and has established a crisis response team to monitor and review recommendations. We are monitoring advice provided by the World Health Organisation, the Australian Government, the NT Government, the NDIA, the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, the Office of the Public Guardian and the NDS. We will be in contact with families and guardians if any disruption to service is anticipated as a result of recommendations received.
